Actresses Heather Graham and Joan Allen joined swimmer Amanda Beard and gymnast Nastia Liukin in the front row, along with newlyweds Jason Biggs and Jenny Mollen.
Dresses made from weightless organzas and silk gazars floated down the runway, with floral prints, bead and ribbon embellishments, eyelet lace and shredded chiffon all adding an extra dimension to the visual excitement and tactile pleasure of the hyper-feminine frocks. The mood was akin to eating frosted petits fours at a tea party on an ocean liner decorated to the gills with flowers.
In a definitive break from past seasons, Badgley Mischka went light on the Swarovski crystals or all-over beading for their gowns.
“Each gown only weighs two or three ounces,” said Badgley. “It definitely makes them much easier to wear.”
That's good news for their celebrity clients come awards season.
Celebrity stylist Philip Bloch loved the all the color he saw on the runway.
“It's really about color this season, the pink, the yellow, the turquoise,” he said.
Actress Heather Graham couldn't name a particular gown that she imagined herself wearing, but she did express fondness for the accessories, which Badgley Mischka produce themselves.
“I just stole a pair of sunglasses!” said Graham backstage after the show. “And we were really focused on the shoes.”
For Badgley Mischka, a popular red-carpet choice, variety is the key to their continued success.
“Sometimes the girls come through and they want the simplest black dress, but then for certain types of occasions, they want something really special and over-the-top,” said Badgley. “You're always limiting yourself if you just do one thing.”
