smooth sailing at charles nolan for spring 09
Sep 8, 2008
Dara

Girlawhirl always expects a garden party when she attends a Charles Nolan show, and for Spring '09, Nolan took the fashion flock to the South of France during the 1920s, just before the era of summertime chic exploded…

Flowing shapes, full skirts and plenty of pleats kept the looks true to the '20s inspiration: for the most part, lean on top and fuller below the waist. But the reason Girlawhirl loves Charles Nolan's clothing is that even though he tells a tale with each collection, there are plenty of crisp tailored pieces and comfortable jersey tops and dresses that translate to the real world and her real life.

Right from the start, a skinny black suit with cropped pants got Girlawhirl in the mood to start a mental wish list. By the time the show ended, it was many items long, including a new version of the little black dress, in jersey with smocking at the hip. Somehow it evoked the '20s vibe, while still looking perfectly modern. An update of a pea coat in black bull denim was quickly added to Girlawhirl's gotta-have-it list as soon as she saw it. Next: the bright – but not too bright – green trench. Pretty floral dresses – there were a couple – also went on the list along with an olive taffeta skirt with a drawstring waist.

Momentarily distracted by the fact that Dara Torres and her daughter Tessa were among the real-life models Nolan always includes in the line up, Girlawhirl practically lost track of her other favorite looks: anything in the mudd linen fabric, a perfect neutral color somewhere between taupe and light brown, there was a long lean sleeveless dress with pleats down the back, a safari jacket with pleated sleeves and even a pair of knicker-like pants, the tweedy indigo linen soft suit with pants that was totally unfussy but completely pulled together.

With classic touches mixed with modern fabrics, Girlawhirl's always thrilled to be part of the Charles Nolan party.
