a super pal tries the latest in hair straightening: the brazilian blowout
May 19, 2009

Girlawhirl's always been pretty happy with her hair, so she's never considered straightening, perming or otherwise altering it. But one of her Super Pals – and she knows she's saying this – has the most unruly hair Girlawhirl's ever seen. It's flat and straight in the front and on top but incredibly curly underneath in the back, resulting in what can only be called a big pouf at the back of her head. So when Girlawhirl heard about a new way to straighten hair called the “Brazilian Blowout,” she insisted her friend try it and report back. Here's what she had to say…

The only word I have to describe the “Brazilian Blowout” is AMAZING! I had thought about getting my hair straightened before but the Japanese straightening seemed to leave people's hair too flat and I wanted to keep some body in my hair. I'd even heard about Brazilian straightening before but the old way of doing it used formaldehyde and there was no way I was putting that on my head. This new “Brazilian Blowout” method does NOT use formaldehyde and none of the chemicals in it are carcinogenic.

I had it done at the Maria Bonita Salon and Spa in New York City, one of the only places using this method. It started with a thorough shampoo, then Roger – the fabulous stylist there – applied the product to my hair and immediately after, he blew it dry and then painstakingly flat ironed it. No sitting around with the stuff on your head waiting for it to work. The heat activates it. Then it was back to the sink for a rinse and condition. I did have to sit under the dryer with the conditioner on, but only for about ten minutes. Then it was another rinse and a final blow dry. The whole process took about two hours and when it was done, my hair was softer, silkier and shinier then it's ever been before.

It's supposed to last for two months or more and I was told that if I keep getting it done, the results will be better and last longer each time. It's been a week so far and I couldn't be happier. What I like best is that my hair is not pin straight. I still have some curls but they are softer and much more manageable. If I let it air dry, it's wavy but still soft and shiny. If I decide to blow dry it straight, it's much easier and takes far less time.

Using a shampoo that's sodium free (as in sodium laurel sulfate free) will help maintain the results, and I'll keep you posted on how it holds up - but for now I am frizz free for the first time thanks to Maria Bonita Salon and the Brazilian Blowout!

Girlawhirl will pass along future updates from her frizz-free Super Pal.
