how much chocolate will be purchased this week?
with valentine's day on friday, it's a lot!
Feb 9, 2009

Sort of like the “guess how many peanuts are in the jar” game, Girlawhirl's got a question for you this week: can you guess how much chocolate is sold in the United States during the week in which Valentine's Day falls?

This year it's expected to be more than last year's total of 345 million dollars worth of chocolate! And while that's definitely a lot of chocolate, Halloween week still rakes in the most in chocolate and candy sales. Here are a few more fun facts about Valentine's Day consumption:

• 58 million pounds of chocolate candy will be sold this week

• In addition to the $345 million spent on chocolate this week, an additional $103 million will be spent on other Valentine's Day candies like candy hearts.

• February 13th is the big day of the week, racking up the highest sales of both chocolate and other candy.

• The day after Valentine's Day – the 15th – ranks second in purchases, with bargain hunters taking advantage of all the half-price candy!

Girlawhirl's sure to indulge in a chocolate truffle or a handful of candy hearts this week. But now she knows that she's just a tiny speck in a major sugar rush!

--editor's note: the facts above come from The Nielsen Company.
