Girlawhirl has become a food label detective. She no longer purchases foods that contain partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, and now she's moved on to high fructose corn syrup, another ingredient found in almost all food products on supermarket shelves…

Nutrition Consultant, Melissa Spiesman, explained to her that high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a scientifically engineered sugar that is cheaper to manufacture and tastes sweeter than beet or cane sugar. Most food companies use HFCS as a sweetener and preservative in processed foods. The large role that HFCS plays in food products can be directly linked to the rise of obesity in our society, and the excessive consumption of HFCS is also linked to increased risk of heart disease, bone loss, and high blood pressure.

Girlawhirl tries to avoid adding too much refined sugar to the foods she prepares, but is now aware that HFCS in some of the cereals and condiments she loves might be holding her back from achieving her health and wellness goals. Luckily there are more and more products being made with her new favorite sweetener, agave syrup.
