Girlawhirl loves sporting events. There's nothing like the enthusiastic rush of cheering on her favorite teams. When the Kentucky Derby comes around each spring though, that's a whole other kind of sporting fun for Girlawhirl. Dressing up in her best bonnet, placing her traditional $2-to-win bet and sipping on the drink of the day all measure up to one fantastic Saturday afternoon… A native Kentucky Super Pal shared some secrets for serving up the perfect Mint Julep – the derby's traditional drink – a.) The julep is best served in a traditional pewter cup, and b.) That cup is coolly frosted over.
When Girlawhirl set out to create her own julep, she did a lot of research. She found many different ways to make the classic bourbon drink – from making fresh mint syrup on the stove the night before to wringing out bourbon soaked mint leaves. But her favorite recipe came via The Food Network from famed chef Bobby Flay.
His Boy Meets Grill show featured a simple and on-the-spot Mint Julep that is the perfect answer for a last minute minty treat.

5 fresh mint leaves, plus a few mint sprigs, for garnish
Place mint leaves, sugar and a splash of water into a silver julep cup or a 12-ounce Tom Collins glass. Muddle the mint, sugar, and water together with the tip of the handle of a wooden spoon. Fill the glass with shaved ice, add the bourbon, and stir until combined. Garnish with a lemon or orange slice, a cherry, and a few sprigs of fresh mint.
