And today's a day set aside to celebrate that perfect mix of crunch, chocolate and gooey melting marshmallows. It's National S'mores Day. Why do the Girl Scouts and S'mores go hand in hand? It seems that the first recipe ever published for these campfire crunchers was found in a Girl Scout Handbook from 1927.

Of course, the recipe for S'mores is one of the easiest around, and with just three ingredients to carry on the trail they're definitely a natural way to end any kind of fire-cooked meal. But even perfection evolves, and Girlawhirl's heard that Girl Scouts of today often add a smear of peanut butter to the graham cracker, or use cookies – chocolate chip, shortbread, or their very own Thin Mints – as a substitute for the graham crackers.

As it turns out, the sky is the limit when it comes to S'mores. As a fundraising project, a troop of Girl Scouts in Kansas has put together a cookbook of more than 140 recipes inspired by the great taste of S'mores. Proceeds from sales of their cookbook S'mores-Any Which Way will be used to fund a trip to Australia.

So how's Girlawhirl celebrating National S'mores Day? With a S'more of course! Ok, maybe a few S'mores! She'll be at a barbeque, but for indoor S'mores, Hershey's has a tabletop grill to get the marshmallows just right.
