honest mate is girlawhirl's new yerba mate pick me up Oct 15, 2009

With the introduction of three flavors of Honest Mate from Girlawhirl's favorite brand of bottled tea, Honest Tea, dipping her toe into the mate pool was as easy as hitting the deli next door to her office. Made from mate that's organically grown on a farm in Argentina that uses environmentally sound practices, Honest Mate's flavors: Agave, Tropical and Sublime, all contain less sugar – the Agave flavor is made with agave and weighs in at just 17 calories per serving – and calories than other bottled mate drinks, so there's no guilt surrounding Girlawhirl's new afternoon pick me up.
Nutritional consultant Melissa Spiesman gives all the Honest Mate flavors a thumbs up. In her opinion they're very viable alternatives for the overly sweetened, over-marketed teas and drinks that have flooded the market recently. The earthy taste might take a bit of getting used to, but it's not unlike the slight bitterness of green tea. Melissa explained to Girlawhirl that yerba mate's high level of antioxidants is the reason people seem not have reactions to its caffeine properties.
Is it life changing? Girlawhirl's not so sure about that. But some healthy variety in her diet and her day is always a good thing.
