Girlawhirl checks out Nan Kempner: American Chic at the Costume Institute at the MET Dec 21, 2006

Girlawhirl, like most of the women she knows, dreams of a wardrobe budget without limitations and the ability to pull from the collections of designers all over the world and create a style all her own. And while she can live that dream in a very tiny way, Nan Kempner, who Vanity Fair called ‘the world's most famous clotheshorse,' got to live it on a grand scale… And a new exhibition at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art celebrates the effortless style and attention to detail that put Nan Kemper into the Best Dressed List's Hall of Fame. Nan Kempner: American Chic features not only clothing from the designers she wore most from the 1960's onward, but also highlights some of the organizational tools and strategies employed in making it all look so easy.
With more than 75 outfits from designers such as Valentino, Oscar de la Renta and Yves Saint Laurent, the exhibit also breaks it all down into categories like resort wear, accessories, eveningwear and more. But what Girlawhirl was most taken with was the way Kempner's closet was organized, with dress rails, shelving and shoes and boots lined up underneath it all.
As Girlawhirl already knows – albeit on a smaller scale than Mrs. Kempner's – there is no such thing as effortless style.
