Precious Properties
Sep 13, 2005

Girlawhirl has noticed that everyone's going semiprecious these days.

People are speaking in stones… extolling the properties of turquoise vs. tourmaline, and some even go as far as choosing their jewels each day based on how they feel that morning, and what they need to get accomplished throughout the day...

It all fell into place for Girlawhirl one sunny afternoon in Sedona.  She had hiked that morning to one of the famed vortexes---so perhaps she was a bit more receptive than usual—and later, as she was shopping, she wandered into the Crystal Castle, a store all about—what else—stones.

Immediately Girlawhirl was drawn to the jewelry case, where there was quite a selection of bracelets, similar to ones she'd seen recently in department stores---little stones, on elastic thread, several strands thick, to make colorful cuffs.

She was entranced by the colors of the stones, and the variety of choices.  But she finally settled on blue apatite—a translucent blue, somewhere between the color of cobalt and turquoise.  It was a perfect accessory to go with all the blues and green of summer.

And then came the fun, because as she was told, the stone chooses you, not the other way around.  Using a book called ‘The Crystal Bible', the saleswoman told Girlawhirl that blue apatite affects the throat chakra, which helps with public speaking and enhances group communication.  When she returned home, Girlawhirl would begin work on a group project where communication would be a key to success. Since she was still reeling from her vortex-induced connection to the earth, she interpreted it all as a great big sign and bought the bracelet—and the book.

Then she walked around the counter again and picked out stone jewelry for all of her buddies:
For those friends with broken hearts: rose quartz
For her always negative, usually in a bad mood friend: turquoise
For her soon to have a baby friend: malachite
For her osteoporotic mother: smithsonite

And now Girlawhirl does it too, choosing a special piece of semiprecious jewelry each morning that she believes will make an impact on her day.
