Girlawhirl is lucky enough to be in the city that never sleeps for the weekend, just in time to see the fanfare and fireworks associated with the first – and last – meeting of three regal ocean liners: the Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth 2 and the brand new Queen Victoria. She can't wait to catch a firsthand glimpse of the celebration marking the first time in the 168-year history of the Cunard Line that three of its Queens will meet in the water...
Starting at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 13, the Queen Mary 2, the Queen Elizabeth 2 and the Queen Victoria will depart from their docks in the New York area and head for open waters. The trio of luxurious ocean liners will meet near the Statue of Liberty around 7 p.m., where a fireworks display will commemorate the occasion.
The New York Harbor meeting of the Cunard Line ships isn't the only reason to celebrate Sunday. The salute not only marks the Queen Victoria's maiden world cruise, this departure is also the 26th and final world cruise for the QE2 (!) which is slated to be retired in November 2008.
Girlawhirl's dreamed of cruising the seas on the QE2 since she was a little girl – what a way to travel – but since that ship has sailed, she'll just have to make sure to meet up with it in the future when it's settled into its new home as a floating hotel in Dubai.
Now that's a vacation worth looking forward to.
