In theaters this Friday: • 88 Minutes—R—Al Pacino stars as Dr. Jack Gramm, a college professor who also works as a forensic psychiatrist for the FBI. When Gramm gets a death threat saying he only has 88 minutes to live, he must use his skills and training to narrow down the suspects, who include a disgruntled student, a former lover and a serial killer who is already on death row. • Forgetting Sarah Marshall—R—A new comedy from the producers of “The 40 Year Old Virgin” and “Knocked Up.” Peter is a struggling musician who has spent six years dating television star Sarah Marshall. He's used to holding her purse on the red carpet and being left out of acceptance speeches, but he's completely at a loss when she dumps him and he ends up alone. After an unsuccessful attempt at womanizing and a breakdown on the job, Peter decides to clear his head with a trip to Hawaii. When he gets there he discovers that his ex and her tragically hip new British-rocker boyfriend are staying at the same hotel. While he struggles with that disaster, he also starts a flirtation with a beautiful resort employee who helps him finally get over Sarah. • The Visitor—PG-13—Walter Vale is a disillusioned 62-year old college professor in Connecticut who has lost his passion for teaching and writing. When his school sends him to Manhattan to attend a conference, Walter is surprised to find a young couple has been living in his city apartment. Victims of a real estate scam, Tarek, a Syrian man, and Zainab, his Senegalese girlfriend, have nowhere else to go so Walter reluctantly allows them to stay with him. Touched by his kindness, Tarek teaches Walter to play the African drum – something that begins to reawaken the aging professor's spirit. Then one day Tarek is stopped by police in the subway and arrested as an undocumented citizen and held for deportation. Walter finds himself compelled to help his new friend, and when Tarek's mother arrives, the professor's commitment develops into an unlikely romance. • The Forbidden Kingdom—PG-13—Jackie Chan and Jet Li team up for the first time on the big screen. While hunting for bootleg kung fu DVDs in Chinatown, a 21st century American teenager, Jason, makes an extraordinary discovery that sends him back in time to ancient China. There, Jason must free the fabled warrior Monkey King, who has been imprisoned by the evil Jade War Lord. Joining him in his quest is the wise kung fu master Lu Yan, played by Jackie Chan and a band of misfit warriors including Silent Monk, played by Jet Li.
New DVD releases:
• Before the Devil Knows You're Dead—Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke play brothers who both need some extra money. So they plan to rob a suburban mom and pop jewelry store that appears to be the quintessential easy target. The problem is it's their actual mom and pop's store and when the robbery goes wrong, it triggers a series of events that shatters the whole family. • Lars and the Real Girl—Ryan Gosling plays Lars, the reclusive eccentric brother of Gus (Paul Schneider). Their mother died during childbirth, and their father recently passed away. While Gus is in a loving marriage with a baby on the way, Lars lives a solitary existence in the garage. When he hears a co-worker talking about a website selling anatomically correct life-size sex dolls, Lars sees it as his way to finally have a girlfriend. Instead of using it as a sexual object, Lars names the doll Bianca and treats her with the utmost gentlemanly respect. Now the townspeople must walk the thin line between supporting Lars, and hopefully turning his attentions towards an actual, live girl. •And don't miss all of your favorite TV shows released on DVD this week: Season 3: American Dad Season 4: Melrose Place

Soon they find a disturbing message from an unknown sender: “Just stay quiet and all safe.” Separately, Spencer's mom is perusing an online memorial for her son when she spies a photograph taken the night he died, and there's someone else in it, just outside the camera's range. She thinks it's Adam Baye. When Adam goes missing, it becomes clear something bigger is afoot, and learning the truth behind Spencer's death will not only help his mother heal, but may also save Adam's life.
• The Day I Ate Whatever I Wanted by Elizabeth Berg —This collection of stories asks the question: What would you do if nobody was watching? Eat everything you want all day long? Start an over 50 dating service? Try to put the pizzazz back in your marriage? The ordinary women in this collection do all of this and more to break out of their every day lives.
• The Miracle at Speedy Motors by Alexander McCall Smith —“Botswana's foremost solver of problems,” Precious Ramotswe, and her assistant Grace Makutsi, are used to handling straightforward domestics cases, which makes the anonymous threatening letters they're receiving even more disturbing.
