The Academy Awards, live Sunday, February 24, 2008, on ABC at 8 p.m. ET.

In theaters this Friday:

• Vantage Point—PG-13—Dennis Quaid and Matthew Fox play Secret Service agents assigned to protect the President (William Hurt) at a landmark global summit on the war on terror. When the President is shot moments after arriving in Spain, chaos ensues and lives collide. An American tourist (Forest Whitaker) is in the crowd videotaping the event to show his kids. An American news producer covering the conference is also there. As the movie follows each person’s perspective of the same 15 minutes prior to and immediately after the shooting, the terrifying truth behind the assassination attempt is revealed.

• Be Kind Rewind—PG-13—Jack Black plays Jerry, a man whose brain “inadvertently” becomes magnetized which leads to him unintentionally destroying all of the tapes in his friend’s video store. To keep the store’s few loyal patrons happy, the pair sets out to recreate the movies the customers want to rent. So they shoot their own versions of films like Ghost Busters, Back to the Future, Robocop and Driving Miss Daisy, using themselves and local townspeople as the stars – and they end up becoming a huge hit in their neighborhood.

• Charlie Bartlett—R—Charlie Bartlett has been kicked out of every private school there is, so he ends up in public school trying to find his place there. He ends up serving as psychologist and pharmacist to his high school’s student body dispensing advice and psychiatric drugs like Ritalin and Prozac. And even though he starts selling the drugs to be popular, he soon realizes he can help these kids by just talking to them about their problems.

New DVD releases:

• In the Valley of Elah—Tommy Lee Jones plays a veteran MP who is out to find the truth when his son – a model soldier – returns from Iraq and then goes AWOL. He enlists Detective Emily Sanders (Charlize Theron) to help him learn the true fate of his son.

• Margot at the Wedding—Nicole Kidman plays a woman who travels with her son to her sister’s wedding. The sisters have always had a strained relationship, and Margot doesn’t like her future brother-in-law. She soon escalates her sister’s feud with the neighbors and family secrets begin to come to light causing everyone to rethink their relationships.

Michael Clayton—George Clooney stars in the title role in this movie about an attorney who is burned out and discontented. Clayton is the in-house “fixer” at a prestigious corporate law firm in New York. He cleans up client messes, big and small. But when he is called in to “fix” a case involving an agrochemical company, Clayton must finally face the reality of who he has become.

Rendition—This movie’s all-star cast includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Reese Witherspoon, Peter Sarsgaard, Meryl Streep and Alan Arkin. Witherspoon plays the wife of an Egyptian-born chemical engineer who disappears on a flight from South Africa to Washington. As she tries to track him down, Gyllenhaal’s character, a CIA analyst, questions his assignment as he becomes party to the man’s interrogation at a secret detention facility outside the U.S.

Maisie’s wealthy benefactor wants to purchase a home in a small English country town, but he’s troubled by the area’s crimes. So he sends Maisie to get to the bottom of it. His suspicions are confirmed when Maisie encounters a shady landowner and a band of gypsies in town for the seasonal harvest. There are also old wounds about a wartime Zeppelin raid no one in town wants to talk about. And it will take all of her skills to get the truth behind the town’s secrets to come out.

He tells Gabe his doctor mysteriously disappeared and he needs Gabe to fill in. Gabe reluctantly agrees. Once inside the White House though, he suspects the president is beginning to go insane. He grapples with a crisis of conscience over going public with his findings, but then begins to think Andrew’s deteriorating mental state may not be due to natural causes. Now he has to find the answers about who’s behind this, and fast, in order to save the president’s life and keep the country safe.

• Lady Killer by Lisa ScottolineStrong willed Mary DiNunzio is a high-powered Philadelphia attorney who is shocked one morning when she walks into her office and finds her still beautiful high school rival standing there asking for help. But Trish’s life has taken a bad turn, and she’s asking Mary for help to escape her abusive, drug-dealing, South Philly mob boyfriend. Mary remembers him from high school too, the object of her schoolgirl crush. But when Trish goes missing and a woman’s body turns up in an alley, Mary finds herself thrust into the middle of a nightmare that may put her job and family on the line, and forces her to face her own past.

• Strangers in Death by J.D. RobbUnder the pseudonym J.D. Robb, author Nora Roberts returns with her latest Lieutenant Eve Dallas adventure. Yet no one is talking to her. Thankfully her billionaire husband has an in for her, and Eve is soon knocking on doors and breaking down barriers.
