In theaters this Friday:
• Beowulf—PG-13—a modern retelling of the ancient epic tale using digitally enhanced live action. After Beowulf destroys the demon Grendel, he incurs the wrath of Grendel's seductive mother, setting off a battle for the ages. The movie boasts an all-star cast including Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins, John Malkovich and Robin Wright Penn.
• Mister Magorium's Wonder Emporium—G—Dustin Hoffman plays Mr. Magorium, the 243 year-old proprietor of the most wonderful toy store in the world where everything comes to life. When he announces he's finally going to retire and hand over the reins to his less than confident young manager, Molly, played by Natalie Portman, the store throws a bit of a tantrum.
• Love in the Time of Cholera—R—Javier Bardem stars as Florentino, a poet and telegraph clerk in Cartagena, Columbia who wins the heart of a young beauty named Fermina by writing her a series of passionate letters. But her father is furious when he finds out about their affair and vows to keep them apart forever. As the years go by, Fermina marries a doctor who has come to their city to fight the cholera epidemic. He takes her away to Paris for years but eventually they return to Cartagena. By then she has all but forgotten her first love, but Florentino has not forgotten her. He still pines for her and will wait a lifetime to be with her again.
New DVD releases:
• Shrek the Third—The lovable ogre is back in a third movie. In this one, his father-in-law dies leaving him and Princess Fiona reigning over Far Far Away. But that's the last thing Shrek wants to do, so he sets off in search of the only other possible heir to the throne, Fiona's teenage slacker cousin Artie. Throw in three ogre babies, an evil plot by Prince Charming and return appearances from Donkey and Puss in Boots and it's another fun filled ogre adventure.
• Ocean's Thirteen—The boys (George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, et al) are back for their third heist. But this time around they're doing it to defend one of their own. After a ruthless casino owner played by Al Pacino double-crosses one of the original Ocean's eleven, the gang sets out to ruin him by staging their most elaborate heist yet.
• I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry—Adam Sandler and Kevin James play New York City firefighters Chuck and Larry. When red tape prevents widower Larry from naming his two kids as the beneficiaries on his life insurance, he calls in a favor from Chuck and asks him to claim to be his domestic partner on some city paperwork. But when a meddling bureaucrat questions their “relationship,” it becomes a citywide issue and front-page news. So the “couple” must move in together to prove their partnership is for real.
