In theaters this Friday: • Michael Clayton—R—George Clooney stars of the title role in this movie about an attorney who is burned out and discontented. Clayton is the in-house “fixer” at a prestigious corporate law firm in New York. He takes and cleans up client messes, big and small. But when he is called in to “fix” a case involving an agrochemical company, Clayton must finally face the reality of who he has become. • We Own the Night—R—Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Wahlberg play brothers who have taken very different paths in life. Bobby (Phoenix) has changed his name and become the manager of a legendary Russian-owned nightclub in Brooklyn. Joseph (Wahlberg) is continuing in the family business – the NYPD. Bobby tries to keep his distance from the Russian gangster operating out of the club – one that his brother is targeting. But when the brothers' worlds collide, it's family loyalty that means the most. • Elizabeth: The Golden Age—PG-13—Cate Blanchett once again stars as Queen Elizabeth I. Aware of the changing religious and political tides in late 16th century Europe, Elizabeth finds her rule openly challenged by the King of Spain, Phillip II. As she prepares to go to war, she struggles to balance her royal duties with her love for Sir Walter Raleigh and becomes the target of an assassination plot that may involve members of her own family. • The Final Season—PG—When the state decides to close the school in the small town of Norway, Iowa, it also means the end for the school's baseball team, the most successful one in state history. Now it's up to a rookie coach to take the team to a final, and 20th, state championship.
New DVD releases:
• 28 Weeks Later—the follow up to 28 days later, this movie picks up six months after the Rage virus has annihilated the British Isles. The army claims the war against the virus has been won and that reconstruction can begin. But the army is wrong – the virus is still alive and more dangerous than ever. • Reign Over Me—Adam Sandler plays a man who lost his family in the September 11th attacks. Five years after the attacks, he runs into his old college roommate, played by Don Cheadle, on a New York City street corner. Rekindling their friendship is the thing that finally appears to help pull him out of his grief and get him to move on with his life. • Surf's Up—An animated comedy that takes a “behind-the-scenes” look at the competitive world of pro penguin surfing. It follows teenage up-and-comer Cody Maverick as he leaves his home and family to enter his first pro competition. Along the way he runs into some interesting characters and learns some life lessons (of course) from a washed up old surfer dude voiced by Jeff Bridges. •And don't miss all of your favorite TV shows released on DVD this week: Season 1: Whose Line Is It Anyway-Vol. 2 Season 2: Family Ties Season 3: Ghost Hunters-Part 1, CSI NY, Season 7: Murder She Wrote Carlos Mencia: The Best of Funny Is Funny
New CD releases: • Complete Clapton—Eric Clapton • Family—LeAnn Rimes • Greatest Hits—Sara Evans • Brave—Jennifer Lopez
In book stores: • Blonde Faith by Walter Mosley—Reluctant L.A. detective Easy Rawlins comes home one night to find his buddy Christmas Black's daughter, Easter, sitting on his stoop. Easy knows this can only mean the ex-Marine is dead, or will be soon. Two suspicious U.S. Army MPs hire him to locate Christmas. His trail leads him to Faith Laneer, a blonde with a dark past who may be in danger – especially when Easy starts to realizes Christmas' disappearance may be rooted in Vietnam.
• Clapton: The Autobiography by Eric Clapton—The sixteen time Grammy winner and only triple Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee chronicles his life from his first taste of fame with the Yardbirds, to success as a member of Cream, time spent as a guest musician with The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, and finally finding himself as a solo artist. The usually private artist also opens up about his failed marriage to George Harrison's ex-wife Patti Boyd and the accidental death of his 4-year-old son in 1991.
• I Am America (and so Can You!) by Stephen Colbert—The Colbert Report host shares his views on what he feels are the most pressing issues of American society, including Faith, Family, Politics and Hygiene.
• World Without End by Ken Follett—Follett's The Pillars of the Earth was a smashing success in 1989. Now, 18 years later the author offers a sequel to the story of the townspeople of Kingsbridge and the Gothic cathedral they worked to build in Pillars. It's 200 years later and a time of change for the townspeople. There are new thoughts on medicine, commerce, architecture and justice, and a battle between those who hold traditions dear and those who favor progress is erupting, all with the impending doom of the Black Death settling upon them.
