Girlawhirl's always thought fashion and fantasy go hand in hand. From dressing up to be the belle of the ball or just dressing to the nines for a night on the town, Girlawhirl's aware she's costuming herself almost every time she gets ready for whatever's on her agenda that day. But could it be true that the fashion industry draws inspiration from the fantasy of classic comic book superheroes? Now Girlawhirl can see the relationship firsthand at The Metropolitan Museum of Art through an exhibit that places the actual superhero costumes side-by-side with couture inspired by the characters... Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy pairs the costumes of Superman, Wonder Woman, Spider Man, Batman, and Catwoman, among others, with couture creations inspired by the characters to explore the relationship between superhero costumes and high end fashion. As the exhibit states, “Fashion, like the superhero, celebrates metamorphosis, providing unlimited opportunities to remake and reshape the flesh and the self.”
John Paul Gaultier's webbed silk haute couture spring/summer 2003 creation and Spyder Active Sports racing suits surround Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man costume while gothic ensembles from Dolce & Gabbana and Thierry Mugler accompany Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman costume, and a designer Clark Kent exposes a Superman-style “M” underneath his Moschino suit.
But more than just mimicking the icons of the superhero world, the Giorgio Armani sponsored exhibit takes a look at some outrageous fashions that look as if they could be the basis for entirely new superheroes. Mugler's creations – like a motorcycle corset – illustrate the point.
Girlawhirl thinks the best thing about the exhibit, which runs through September 1st, is that it's not just for fans of the fashion world. She can't wait to take her Super Pals and their little ones to see it. She can only imagine the excitement on their faces when they see Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man costume or Christian Bale's Dark Knight costume in person – she already knows the smile the couture gave her.
