When Girlawhirl saw the cover of The Beach House by Jane Green she knew she couldn't make it through the summer without picking it up. This is one book she's glad she decided to judge by its cover. Besides it being the perfect season to really get into the story – a book about a winter holiday just wouldn't seem right while she's sitting by the seashore – the characters in Green's book, and their summer spent on Nantucket, are really what drew her in…
Nan is a character. She's known around Nantucket as the eccentric old lady who lives in the rambling house on the bluff. She thinks nothing of clipping flowers from her seasonal neighbors' gardens or skinny dipping in their pools when they aren't home. A longtime widow, and even longer Nantucket resident, Nan discovers that thanks to bad handling, the money she thought she could live on forever has vanished.
Unwilling to sell her beloved home, the 65-year-old charismatic beauty – even if she thinks her good looks have long since faded – decides to open her home and turn “Windermere” into a summer boarding home.
Nan couldn't be more pleased. Her home feels alive for the first time in years with laughter and love. But the arrival of an unexpected guest turns life upside down for everyone.

Her first tenant is Daniel, a wealthy, recently separated father of two that wants to be near his daughters vacationing with their mother on the island. The next to arrive is Daff. Her 13-year-old daughter Jessica is spending the summer with her father making this is the first time she has had time to herself in years. Daff feels guilty about welcoming the break, but she's happy to get away from the undue punishment Jessica has put her through since the demise of her marriage. Even Nan's son Michael returns home for the first summer in years – though he's really just trying to escape a romantic mess he's created with his married boss back in New York City.
