Why She Buys by Bridget Brennan

A recently published book caught Girlawhirl’s eye. Called Why She Buys: How to Reach the World’s Most Powerful Consumers, it builds on the fact that women buy almost 80% of all consumer goods. Written by marketing expert Bridget Brennan, whose company, Female Factor, works with corporations to keep things female friendly…

Here’s how Brennan describes the issue: “If the consumer economy had a sex it would be female… If the business world had a sex it would be male. And therein lies the pickle.”

Shopping expert Paco Underhill agrees with Brennan’s sentiment. He was quoted in Time magazine last year saying that in order to thrive, retailers needed to become more female friendly, stating that most stores are owned by men, designed by men, and managed by men. He’s even gone so far as to say in his 2009 book Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping that Walmart could improve it’s apparel business tremendously if they had more female managers in the stores!
