shine and sport mix at lela rose
Feb 4, 2008

Girlawhirl admits that Leal Rose's show is always one of her very own personal highlights of New York Fashion Week. These are clothes she can totally relate to, proportions that she truly incorporates into her own wardrobe, and pieces that – depending on the state of her bank account balance – she truly considers purchasing. So when the music started, Girlawhirl was ready…

And here's what she loved: the longer blouson jacket. The shape was easy and a touch sporty or collegiate, and Rose called it a duffle jacket. It hit at the low hip, creating a completely new proportion and silhouette. She showed it in a few fabrics, from felted cashmere to patent tweed, and Girlawhirl loved it most when it was paired with a skinny pant. Taking the new proportion further, the idea of the longer flowing top, without an emphasis at the waist was shown throughout the collection, on top of skirts and full pants as well.

The fabrics also had Girlawhirl's eyes glued to the runway. There were so many that shimmered and shined – like the aforementioned patent tweed. Looped paillettes created sparkles instead of the typical overt shine. Gold dotted fabric shone in a pleated skirt and dresses and metallic tweeds shimmered – all without going overboard on the glitz. On the matt side, the etched tweed in black and cream was beautiful, looking a little bit like bark – truly a wonderful way to bring a touch of nature into Girlawhirl's wardrobe.

Once again, Girlawhirl saw gold and teal, here called Goldfinch and Peacock. The pretty and very wearable deep red was called Cardinal, which along with Mallard, a dark green color, rounded out Rose's palette of accent colors.

Like so many of the collections Girlawhirl's seen, sleeves and collars in Rose's Fall 08 collection were floaty and almost ruffle-like, once creating a small cape-like effect around the back of a dress. There were more ruffles, bows and belts on many of the party dresses and evening looks as well. The show stopper for Girlawhirl was the fuscia embroidered tank dress, something she'll definitely dream about as summer approaches.

But one thing Girlawhirl doesn't have to think twice about going overboard on: the shoes. They're all part of the Lela Rose Collection for Payless.
