is it long & lean love? new jean fits at the gap have girlawhirl and her super pals swooning Aug 19, 2009

“We started from scratch,” said Patrick Robinson, as he began to explain the complete overhaul of Gap's jeans that resulted in the 1969 Premium Jeans Collection. Made from premium denim – the combination of fits, fabrics, colors, washes and treatments was more than Girlawhirl could count; she was practically overwhelmed – in a good way – by the options… “What's the first thing a woman does when she tries on a pair of jeans? She looks at her butt,” says Robinson, Gap's EVP of Design. He went on to say that in creating each of the fits, lots of attention was paid to the rear, in addition to many other key fit points. As the new jeans were developed, testers wore them for a day – with their bodies marked to show where the jeans sat when they put them on so that designers could make sure that they fit the same at the end of the day. Did they feel good? Stretch enough – but not too much? Fabric, washes, stitching and even the fastening received the same scrutiny.
How do the fits break down? For women there's Always Skinny, Real Straight, Sexy Boot, Long & Lean, Curvy, Perfect Boot and The Boyfriend. For men, Skinny, Straight, Authentic, Standard, Boot, Loose, and Easy. And while the range of fit options is impressive in and of itself, what Girlawhirl couldn't get over was the variety available within each fit. And, as Robinson predicted, many of the fits worked for her – in her true size, no need to go up or down. So she's not just Long & Lean, she can wear Always Skinny one day, the Boyfriend another, and Perfect Boot as well.
For men, the idea of variety within a specific fit might be a revelation – but Robinson explained that it's something women asked for. “Guys stick to the one fit they're comfortable in, but this way they've got options, like a dark jean for going out at night. Women love it when men wear jeans.”
Girlawhirl can't stop talking about her new favorite jeans. And for her friends whose first words are, “I can't wear Gap jeans,” she offers this challenge: hit the stores and try on the new 1969 collection. She's pretty sure that they'll find a pair to love.
