tracy reese: dark and stormy

A painted backdrop of a jagged, stormy coastline set the stage for Tracy Reese's Fall 2008 collection, shown in New York on Sunday, Feb. 3...

It was a combination of romantic, painterly prints, nature references and a soft, feminine silhouette that is Reese's signature.

Reese said after the show that she was inspired by the elements and the fact that the weather is changing. At first, this mostly translated into a dark and stormy color palette of blues and blacks. Dresses were full and nipped at the waist, a very traditional fifties silhouette, while a number of skirts, similarly voluminous, featured pleating and drop waists, paired with long, drapey cardigans or soft blouses.

Tracy Reese, whose company is just over a decade old, has been extraordinarily successful at capturing the essence of what women of all ages want to wear. She's never strayed from her classic vision of femininity, and remarked backstage that she felt that after seasons of shapeless, formless volume, women were ready to return to something that showed off their figures instead.

"I'm all about the waist," she said.

Prints are also another one of Reese's strong suits, and her Fall 2008 collection was no exception. There were some great ones, including a trompe l'oeil blow-up of a chunky knit, raven feathers, watercolor blots and abstracted green grass.

Reese's second passage featured earthier tones - camel, grass green, copper - with added shimmer in the form of lurex and sequins.

A final series of pink floral frocks signaled a break in the storm clouds and hinted at an exuberant spring.
