viktor & rolf glamour protest

NO, read the giant, one-foot diameter petal on the opening model’s jacket in Viktor & Rolf's fall 2008 collection, in a show protesting the non-stop shows, openings, launches and seasons that is a designer’s lot in the modern world...

NO sang out Madonna on a sensational Berlin techno remix soundtrack as gals appeared with NO as war paint around their eyes or woven into mesh cocktails or sprayed on a gray T-shirt worn by Russian beauty Natasha Poly.

But this was no nihilist moment, as Viktor & Rolf staged one of their best collections in many seasons – with artfully cut loose-weave wool pant suits or splendidly sexy wool corsets.

The Dutch pair even said no to sewing, eschewing thread and using staples to hold together many of the more glamorous looks.

“We wanted to say no to the permanent stress machine that is fashion. We love fashion but not all aspects of it,” Viktor Horsting told FWD post show.

“We like women who say no. Women of character, who like to have their own way, inspire us. That’s sexy to us,” added Rolf Snoeren.

One Viktor & Rolf problematic is that their concepts often outweigh their collections so that clothes expound an idea rather than flatter women. Not this season, when the idea heightened and enhanced the beauty and originality of the clothes and accessories.

And talk about great footwear! The duo opened with some sensational Velcro flap, patent leather boots with slanted heels that managed to look medieval, yet futurist at the same time, then followed with beautiful bird’s nest erratic weave multi-strap high-heels that echoed Herzog & De Meuron’s Beijing Olympic stadium. Like the building, this was a path breaking collection, and moment.
