Eastern glitz met Western glamour Tuesday night in Manhattan, when Vivienne Tam staged her fall 2008 collection before a packed crowd in Bryant Park...
Tam, Canton born but Hong Kong raised, has a loyal following of gals who love and live for color and don't get conceptual fashion from the likes of Prada or Marni. The fashion crowd, though, has largely by-passed this designer of late, viewing her meeting of Chinoiserie and moderately priced chic as not quite news worthy any more. So, even though the Promenade tent was crowded, the front row contained precious few editors.
Tam's latest collection did take a new tack towards glitzy futurism, where dresses sparkle, tights are all shiny and women appear with mega short, pagoda shouldered dresses for a yet to be financed Asian version of the 1960s TV show "Lost in Space."
Tam also had an unfathomable obsession with Mickey Mouse, whose head appeared giant size on a series of satin dresses, and even the look the designer wore when she took her bow.
The collection, however, did contain a few gems – black jacquard frock coats and mini swing jackets or curvy at the hip cocktails made in a swirling fabric pattern.
They were the sorts of outfits that would look stunning on the lovely Kelly Choi, our favorite New York foodie. The leggy talk show host, attired in a purple sequined Tam column, was the star of the front-row, and showed why Vivienne has a strong fan base – her glam is never too improbable.
But though Tam's concept is strong, her execution now seems hackneyed. Tam should hire herself some whiz kid assistant out of St. Martins with a few years under their belt in Paris and Milan. This is a decent brand, but one in need of a new broom.
