kaleidoscope eyes at anna sui

Anna Sui was in high baroque - and high Sui - form on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 6, as New York fashion week hit full stride. Sui, who has perfected the art of reinterpreting sixties and seventies rock ‘n roll looks, showed a high-spirited mix of psychedelia-inspired looks for her Fall 2008 collection, featuring art nouveau prints, American Indian references, gypsy chic, Mama Cass caftans all pulled together in a very Biba-esque way. Swirlies of the world, unite...

There was so much going on, it almost hurt your eyes (but, no one ever prized iridescent lamé for its subtleness, used here for caftans), but as anyone who's ever stepped foot into an Anna Sui store knows, the whole point is to feel like you've hit a vintage gold mine, or that you're in the personal walk-in closet of the coolest Hollywood costume collector around. So choice is everything.

As though stepping into a Gustav Klimt painting, Sui piled it on with a fringed crochet top layered over a diamond printed chiffon blouse, vibrant ultramarine cardigan with poppy colored crochet trim layered over a chiffon tunic and embroidered wool flannel skirt, pleated velvet shorts and great looking velvet capes with gold braiding. The American Indian-inspired looks included a short wood beaded black silk velvet dress, a blanket-like color block crochet cardigan or a basketweave chiffon dress, all paired with fringed moccasin boots.

Sui accessorized it all with some excellent multicolor printed tights (Atsugi for Anna Sui, Look From London and Hue) and thin black flower headbands (frequently seen worn in New York by girl-about-town Arden Wohl as well as a bevy of Lower East Side dwelling gals).

An excellent soundtrack by Frederic Sanchez set the right mood - there was of course the inclusion of the more familiar Sgt. Pepper-era Beatles tracks, but a slew of sixties psych rarities took everyone on a ride through the crushed velvet purple haze of the paisley underground.
