Badgley Mischka Stays Sleek
Fashion Wire Daily - Emily C. Gyben
Sep 7, 2007
The look of fashion is changing, and power players Mark Badgley and James Mischka, generally known for producing red carpet evening wear, are keeping up...

After several seasons of trapeze and tent dresses dominating the runways, fall showed sleeker shapes across the board. Spring is looking to continue that trend, and Badgley Mischka's Spring 2008 collection showed some looks on September 6 that, following what seems like an eternity of babydoll dresses and cigarette pants, were fresh and new.

Wide-leg pants were paired with tailored jackets, and ladylike blouses were in sweet yellow and black floral prints. High-waisted pencil skirts were tailored and pretty. Swimsuits in fuchsia were worn with floppy, wide-brimmed hats, and models carried the soon-to-be ubiquitous gray patent bag.

It certainly wasn't groundbreaking, but it was refreshing.

Badgley Mischka took another cue from a fall trend with a series of ombré dresses; a cream-to-moss chiffon dress was spring-appropriate, but still called to mind Louis Vuitton and Prada's fall ombrés and dégradés.

A new silhouette that Badgley and Mischka broke out this season was the drop-waist dress, the '20s classic that seemed so new after seasons of empire-waisted princess gowns - though granted, Badgley Mischka showed plenty of those as well. However, a beautiful jeweled, blush-colored tulle and satin drop-waisted dress stole the show, attended by Ivana Trump, actress Emmy Rossum, singer J.C. Chasez, and "Desperate Housewives" actress Teri Hatcher, star of the latest Badgley Mischka ads.

A string of evening gowns wrapped up the show; again, pretty, but expected. Beaded and jeweled contrasting seams added a graphic, art deco touch to several, and a soft dove gray was a welcome change from the black beaded evening gown. However, the majority of gowns seemed not only familiar but unnecessary.

Badgley and Mischka know what their customer wants - pretty, detailed, but in no way avant-garde evening dresses - but at the same time, they're doing an okay job keeping up with the metaphorical fashion Joneses.
