Girlawhirl doesn't want to think about it yet, but it's inevitable, fall is coming soon, and she's got to start thinking about her wardrobe. This year more than ever, making smart fashion – and shopping – decisions will be key. There's no need to shortchange her retirement savings just to look good…

She's also trying to keep it real for fall – meaning that she has no intention of going overboard. A Saturday morning spent reviewing what still works – and fits – from last fall can save both time and money in the long run. That way she can be sure to focus on new pieces that truly update her look, rather than duplicate what's already in her closet. A few pieces she's on the lookout for include the following:

A high waisted pant: with an almost sculptural fit through the hip and a straight cut leg in charcoal grey.

A skinny cigarette pant: perfectly proportioned to hit at the ankle bone in black, brown or navy.

A swingy skirt: slim through the waist and hip then flared and graceful enough to give her the lady-like look that she saw up and down so many runways. Any color will be great here – including “new neutrals” like green, burgundy and camel – and she's sure that she'll see this silhouette in a print as well.

A long skinny fine knit cardigan: The shining star of the season. Perfect to top any of the bottoms above, and an easy way to make last year's basics look fresh and new.

A thin belt: to wear over the aforementioned cardigan.

She'll also keep her eye out for a printed dress or two. There were so many florals, paisleys and other patterns on the runways that she knows they're important as well.

Of course there will be additions, most likely in the form of pretty fall florals, and she hasn't even begun to look at shoes, belts and bags. But with these basics, the foundation of her fall wardrobe will be in place. To make sure she's following the trends, Girlawhirl checks in with her shopping cheat sheet, a visual summary of Fall 08 runway trends. print yours here
