That doesn't just mean perhaps waiting for a designer piece to be marked down, but also that the pieces she does purchase become workhorses, providing her with multiple looks and longevity as the season unfolds. Perhaps nothing that she purchases for fall 08 will fulfill that requirement better than the long skinny cardigan…
She's over last fall's lantern sleeves, fly away fronts and oversized collars. What she needs – yes, if there ever was a case to be made for needing a new article of clothing this is it – is a long fine gauge v neck cardigan. It's got to hit her somewhere between the bottom of her hip and the top of her thigh, which will make it the perfect counterbalance when belted over a full skirted or flowing printed dress, and will also allow for it to be layered over a tank or patterned blouse and a pair of slim cropped pants or even her soon to be new favorites – high-waisted, full leg trousers. Details can be kept to a minimum, there's no need for fussy ruffles along the placket or even a rib at the bottom that's so wide that it pulls the whole thing in around her bottom. Simplicity is the key here so she can wear it for all it's worth: belted or not, buttoned or open, she can't go wrong with this one.
There are so many options out there including her weakness, cashmere. But merino and yarns blended with a touch of cashmere keep the price under control. A special favorite is J.Crew's version with pretty sparkling crystal buttons.
