michael kors: walks like a lady
Fashion Wire Daily - Renata Espinosa
Feb 7, 2008

Instead of taking us to Aspen or St. Moritz on a ski vacation, Michael Kors kept the jet set grounded in the city with his Fall 2008 collection...

The always packed show, held in Bryant Park on Wednesday, Feb. 6, was Kors' take on 1950s ladylike dressing, with a collection populated by secretaries and housewives and their square ad men husbands in fedoras and geek chic black frame glasses.

By almost exclusively featuring dresses, skirts, prim sweaters and fur trimmed coats, it felt rather old fashioned. A woman dressed like this come fall, in an election year that could see the first female president in office, would be a conservative sartorial choice.

But ladylike elegance - and the continued celebration of the dress - is a dominant theme this fashion week in New York. Alternately, a return to power dressing via strong silhouettes redefining the female form is another big trend, seen everywhere from Proenza Schouler's collection of paper airplane-inspired folds of fabric to Alexandre Herchcovitch's lesson in geometric shapes.

Kors' ladies wore fitted pencil skirts, soft knit sweaters, three-quarter length coats and gowns your grandmother might have worn to a dance social, with their voluminous fifties-style skirts.

The runway backdrop featured a live video feed of the photo pit, a not-so-subtle clue that these were the kind of clothes for uptown ladies to be photographed in while traipsing through the social circuit.

Kors upped the color and pattern quotient this season, with sharp hues of mustard, lime, amethyst and raspberry along with leopard prints and sequined florals.

Standard Kors touches of luxury, like crocodile and fur, were here, including a chic croc coat and interesting fur pieces like a cowl neck warmer and a belted cape coat that doubled as a dress.

Noticeably absent were the usual assortment of handbags, save for a few small purses and clutch bags. Clearly, the idea of carrying around a giant tote bag isn't particularly becoming to a lady.
