New York Fashion 2006 daily update: Monday Sept 11
Sep 11, 2006
Girlawhirl's been watching the shows, taking in the action at Olympus Fashion Week in New York's Bryant Park and at other locations throughout the city and, while it's still early, she's starting to get a feeling for what's going to be hot – and cool - for Spring 2007…

BCBG, Max Azria showed tons of dresses, all with some sort of embellishment. There was lots of lace from, Battenberg to eyelet, and even dresses with lace insets and sleeves. Most of the silhouettes were floaty and a little ethereal, some with belts at the waist. Pretty colors like green, yellow, a saturated salmon pink and deep red and dusty blue, played off pure white to create a spring palette that was modern and fresh and used brown - instead of black – as an accent color in the prints.

Last Fashion Week, Girlawhirl loved Alice Roi's collection. Aside from the gothic looking hair and make-up, she thought that Roi's fall collection really broke down the new proportions and layering into wearable options and easy to understand combinations. For spring '07, Roi showed a collection that somehow managed to walk the line between ladylike and motorcycle chic. The pretty fabrics took the edge off some of the tougher and edgier silhouettes so that they looked fun to wear. And the handbags, especially the one worn around the waist, made Girlawhirl wish they were available in the stores today. Colors here were light and neutral, creams, khaki and white, with some black and a punchy green. Shine was part of the mix here, not really metallic, but a touch of satin-like shine for day… something Girlawhirl's beginning to see a lot of.

Atil Kutoglu was a designer that Girlawhirl was a little unfamiliar with, but after seeing the show she assumes that women who live in places like the Hamptons or Malibu must know him very well! Gorgeous summer outfits with shimmer and shine casually mixed with lightweight sweaters and knit tops. Girlawhirl's favorite outfit? White pants – this was one of the few collections where pants were abundant - and a grey tank topped with a gorgeous lavender linen coat. What Girlawhirl really loved in this collection was that all that shimmer and shine didn't make the pieces too dressy or precious. They looked fresh and modern paired with grey T-shirts! And while almost all of the designers she had seen so far were showing gold and bronzy metallics, Atil Kutoglu showed silver too.

James Coviello's collection – one of Girlawhirl's favorites – was, as always, lovely and lady like. With his inspiration taken from Palm Beach in its heyday, extravagance and opulence was woven into every fabric. A pretty golden brocade dress could have been old fashioned, but there was a chartreuse green woven behind the gold in the fabric. Sweaters were trimmed with eyelet edges or made from crocheted hexagons in a mix of colors. Skirts were full and flowing for the most part, and like most of the other shows Girlawhirl had seen, waistlines were at or above the natural waist. It was pretty without being prissy, and made Girlawhirl wish for a wedding or afternoon tea party of some sort so she could get started planning an outfit.

Girlawhirl was keeping her eye on some of the new proportions she's just getting used to for fall, to see if they'll still be around next spring, and so far it looks like, leggings and voluminous tops and/or dresses are ideas that will continue into spring. Waistlines are definitely on the rise, with no low rise pants – or all that many pants at all for that matter – spotted so far. What she loves however, is the fact that so far, most of the spring colors are not pastels, but pretty colors that happen to be saturated instead of whitened out. Deep red, seems to be a color that's present in a lot of collections, along with lots of greens, shimmering golds and bronze, white, brown and black.
