She had just gotten used to wearing longer tunic length tops with her skinny jeans. And while she can continue with the long over lean look no matter what the actual components, a long top doesn't work with her new high waisted, wide legged jeans. But here's what does work:
• Tucking in: It feels so high-school to tuck and belt, but these days, it works again. A pretty blouse is all she needs to look thoroughly modern – really!
• Wrap around: Tops that wrap and tie usually have a slim fit and accentuate the waist, so this is great for a lean on top with a fuller bottom proportion. Girlawhirl looks for tops that stay on top – which means no tunics, these tops need to end just above her hip bone.
• Short and swingy: A look that Girlawhirl thought she couldn't pull off – until she figured out that if her top has volume there are a few rules to follow. First it has to be controlled volume, either with shirring somewhere, for example on the sides, or some sort of a belt, tie or gathers at the waist. And the top must end above the hip bone so that there's some area of fittedness showing on her body before the wide legs begin. In this case she should ideally be showing a slim hip area that's below the fullness of the top and above the wideness of the legs.
• Layering: When layering a sweater over another top and her new jeans, Girlawhirl looks for a lightweight (translation: fine gauge) slim fitting one that has a nice rib around the bottom so that it too, keeps the area below her waist looking trim. A longer belted cardigan also works and just like the idea of the wrap top, a sweater that wraps and ties is great too.
• Keeping warm: With wide legs on the bottom, Girlawhirl's careful about what kind of outerwear she slips into. A poncho or cape can create a look that's almost as wide as she is tall. So instead, she opts for long belted cardigans to emphasize her waist or when it's really chilly out, a coat that hits her anywhere below the mid-thigh.
• What doesn't work: just as there are plenty of ‘do's' when it comes to the wide-legged jean, Girlawhirl found that there are, of course, a few “don'ts.” Her favorite sweater that could always be counted on to cover her butt is a definite no, as is any kind of oversized boyfriend sweater, or anything long and droopy on top.
