Handbag History

Who would have thought that long before Jerry Seinfeld and Joey Tribbiani attempted to popularize the man purse that it was actually acceptableeven a sign of high social statusfor a man to carry his own type of handbag...

While flipping through a copy of Anna Johnsons Handbags: The Power of  the Purse at a local bookstore, Girlawhirl was struck by a photograph of a carrying case that once belonged to none other than Napoleon, one of historys most feared yet undeniably elegant conquerors.  His bag was portfolio-like in deep forest green leather and embossed in gold. He used the ornate power bag to carry important documents. Extravagance is equated with Napoleons reign so its no surprise that in 1810 he commissioned the exquisite bag to be made for every member of his entourage, including his sister Paulinewho used hers to carry love letters.

Through lots of great pictures and informative text, the book explores how what started as a bag made of scraps of animal skins tied together with a stick to hold food, has developed into a wonderful way to accentuate an outfit and, more importantly, hold the essentials of a womans everyday existence.

A must for any woman with an eye for accessories, Girlawhirl loved the comparison pages, where a Valentino Garavani from 2001 is compared to the 1969 Gucci that inspired it, and how the classic Hermes Kelly bag has evolved through the years.
