cool globes: hot ideas for a cooler planet are on display in chicago
Jun 7, 2007

Recently passing through the city of Chicago, Girlawhirl got a glimpse of Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet, a citywide art project that's drawing attention to global warming and hopes to inspire everyone who sees the 124 globes along the lakefront to do what they can to take action…

Artists from around the world were given a plain globe, five feet in diameter that they transformed into all kinds of versions of Earth – each depicting a solution to the problem of global warming. And to lead by example, the whole project is carbon neutral in its execution. The globes are on display along Lake Michigan, from the Field Museum up to Navy Pier, through September. There are also 200 mini-globes that are displayed throughout the city, each also with a global warming solution illustrated on them. These globes were made by some of the artists who worked on the full sized ones as well as students and celebrities. Even U.S. Senator Barack Obama designed one.

Anyone who sees the globes can make a pledge – a Cool Commitment – to incorporate five changes into their everyday lives or their businesses. By registering their pledge at the Cool Globes website, they'll be entered to win a Toyota Prius. And in October all the globes will be auctioned, with the proceeds to benefit environmental education programs.
