Girlawhirl was recently given a bag of eco-goodies from a Super Pal who had attended a conference featuring great green ideas, products and services. In the midst of samples of all kinds of energy bars – from hemp to raw cacao based – innovative cleaning products and more, was one thing that Girlawhirl made use of immediately: a Five Minute Shower Timer… It's just like an egg timer but with a suction cup attached to the back of it. When Girlawhirl turns on her shower, she flips it and sticks it right where she can see it, so she can keep an eye on it as she shampoos, conditions, rinses and repeats.
And she's come to find out that a five minute shower, which honestly sounded so short when she tried it the first time, is long enough for all her scrubbing, shaving and shampooing needs, and if everyone shortened their showers, it could really make an impact. Showers account for 2/3 of all hot water heating costs, and installing a low flow showerhead – which Girlawhirl already got her landlord to do – adds up to even more energy savings. It all translates into fewer carbon emissions and a couple of hundred dollars in savings per year for each person who replaces their showerhead with a low flow one and limits their shower time.
And for information on low flow showerheads, Girlawhirl went to gaiam.com
