world environment day, it's today Jun 5, 2007

With so much focus on the environment, it feels – to Girlawhirl at least – like every day is Earth Day. But today really is a day that's meant to honor the earth and the environment. It's United Nations World Environment Day, and this year, the theme is “Melting Ice – a Hot Topic?”… Girlawhirl knows that melting ice certainly is a hot topic. In fact, the United Nations Environmental Program just released an assessment called Global Outlook for Ice and Snow at the World Environment Day event in Tromso, Norway. The report, written by leading scientists from all over the world, will look at the changes in the ice and snow covered regions of the world and how the continued melting of snow, sea ice and glaciers will impact the planet over the course of the next century.
Although there will be events held all over the world, the host city of Tromso, Norway was chosen because it's the northernmost city in Norway, and therefore, on the frontlines of climate change, directly seeing and feeling the effects of melting polar ice on the environment. Both new opportunities and threats have arisen over the past few years as the ice has melted. Dealing with those issues, like an increase in tourism and exploration versus dangers to wildlife and cultures that have lived in the Arctic will be part of the day's agenda.
Girlawhirl hopes that there will be some good news in the report released today. For more information on World Environment Day click here.
