One of the most intriguing aspects of the race to come up with cars that don't run on fossil fuel is the fact that more than a few people have figured out how to get their cars to run on vegetable oil. A few weeks ago, Debra Lynn Dadd, The Queen of Green and her husband Larry Redalia made a cross-country trip in a car that Redalia had converted from diesel to run on waste vegetable oil... The trip was chronicled on Debra's website debralynndadd.com and Girlawhirl had to find out more. As it turns out, converting a car isn't all that expensive, and more often than not waste vegetable oil is free, if occasionally hard to come by. By reading Dadd's daily posts, Girlawhirl learned a lot about the realities of driving a car that runs on waste vegetable oil: it's necessary to scope out restaurants – the most likely place to get the oil. Filtering the oil and replacing filters in the engine are all important, and when the temperatures drop, it might be necessary to switch back to diesel. But truth be told, it's an unbelievably economical way to drive.

Dadd says, “The other day we needed to move some things and were driving our pick-up truck, which is not yet veggie-oil-powered. We stopped at a gas station and filled it up and then it smelled like gasoline when we were driving. ‘This smells terrible!' I said, and Larry said, ‘I prefer the smell of French fries!' I really didn't realize until then how much nicer it is to ride in a veggie car.”
