al gore challenges the nation to switch to carbon free sources of electricity in 10 years.
Aug 7, 2008

In a recent speech, Al Gore issued a challenge to Americans: change our current power grid so that 100 percent of the electricity in the country comes from renewable and carbon free sources within 10 years. Girlawhirl's already signed up for her utility's “green” option, but there's plenty more she can do to help make this happen…

The website wecansolveit.org lays out steps that Girlawhirl can take to help push forward with Gore's challenge. Currently, most of the electricity in the U.S. comes from power plants that burn coal, and they're heavy contributors to the pollution that causes global warming. Even though the technology is already in place, only 5% of our country's electricity comes from renewable sources like wind and geothermal power or solar energy.

And truth be told, we've got plenty of renewable energy to spare. The United States has actually been referred to as the “Saudi Arabia of wind power.” It's been predicted that if just the wind in North Dakota alone was captured, it would provide enough power for one quarter of U.S. homes. And the energy from the sun is a true power-house: just 20 days of solar energy contains as much energy as is believed to be stored in the Earth's entire reserves of coal, oil and natural gas.

In order to make the change, we've got to shift the current economy and build a new kind of power grid. A recent report showed that building this “Green Economy” would "lead to over three million new green-collar jobs, stimulate $1.4 trillion in new GDP, add billions in personal income and retail sales, produce $284 billion in net energy savings, all while generating sufficient returns to the U.S. treasury to pay for itself over ten years."

Definitely win-win as far as Girlawhirl's concerned. Learn more, and watch Gore's speech at wecansolveit.org.
