with ecotraction, there's finally a green alternative for icy roads and sidewalks Feb 19, 2009

When one thinks about it, it's pretty obvious: all that salt distributed on icy roads during the winter months can't be a good thing. It's not good for the roads themselves, for the water that the salt ultimately winds up in, for cars, for Girlawhirl's favorite shoes, and for dogs. But, more than 20 million tons of road salt was used in the United States last winter, causing damage to almost everything it came into contact with… Finally a green and healthy alternative to road salt is available. Called EcoTraction®, it's made from a porous volcanic mineral that – like a sponge – absorbs the thin layer of water that makes ice slippery. It really embeds itself into the ice and can work even when it's very cold out – and it creates better traction than salt. But the best part is that it's completely non-toxic. Plants can grow in it, water flows through it and it's non corrosive and safe for pets, who end up ingesting rock salt and the chemicals it's mixed with they the lick their paws.
In fact, it was the loss of his dog, and then two more on his street, that lead EcoTraction creator Mark Watson to search for a safer alternative than the chemical-salt cocktail that's been used for years. Because it's so pet-friendly, PetSmart's one of the best places to find it.
