can green collar jobs save the US economy?
There's been much talk about how green collar jobs will turn around the US economy.
Jan 15, 2009
Some say that it's what we need to get things going again, others caution that with the shift in industries it just means that jobs that are going away – like assembly line workers in car plants that are now closed – are being replaced with new ones that won't be as stable. And while everyone agrees that any new jobs are good jobs, there's still a bit of uncertainty when it comes to just how to define green ones. . .

Just the term “green collar job” seems indefinable. There are many definitions circulating, some stipulating that these jobs must be upwardly mobile and pay more than minimum wage, others decree that the term should only be applied to blue collar jobs that have been lost and are then replaced by jobs that serve the new green economy – and not too long ago the term was used to refer to marijuana growers! It seems obvious to Girlawhirl – she considers any job that helps reduce carbon emissions, fight global warming, lessen our green-jobs dependence on fossil fuel and help save energy and planet earth to be “green” – but everyone seems to have their own definition.

Some good news on the green job front comes from the fact that because so many of them deal with infrastructure – like the building, installation and maintenance of a new power grid and refurbishing buildings to be more energy efficient, they need to be done by American workers. There's no chance of sending these jobs overseas where the cost of labor is less. And that could be just the thing the American economy needs right now.
