Just the term “green collar job” seems indefinable. There are many definitions circulating, some stipulating that these jobs must be upwardly mobile and pay more than minimum wage, others decree that the term should only be applied to blue collar jobs that have been lost and are then replaced by jobs that serve the new green economy – and not too long ago the term was used to refer to marijuana growers! Some good news on the green job front comes from the fact that because so many of them deal with infrastructure – like the building, installation and maintenance of a new power grid and refurbishing buildings to be more energy efficient, they need to be done by American workers. There's no chance of sending these jobs overseas where the cost of labor is less. And that could be just the thing the American economy needs right now. |
