After having a bit of a laugh with her neighbor – who she's sure does not share her online shopping addiction – it took Girlawhirl almost an hour to sort through just over a week's worth of mail. And honestly, it was all those catalogs that went straight into her recycling bin that shamed her. Sure she can't do without her favorites like J.Crew and the spectacular books that the department stores send out seasonally, but it was definitely time to figure out how to stop the deluge of catalogs that she wasn't reading.

She activated her kit so GreenDimes could immediately start getting her name and address off the lists of direct mail marketers. In addition, as one of the activation steps she clicked over to a page on the Direct Marketing Association website where she was charged an additional dollar to fill out a form that will add her name to a list so that direct marketers know she doesn't want to receive their mailings.

So, for $16, she saved a bunch of trees, thousands of gallons of water – because 28 billion gallons of water are used to produce American junk mail every year – and 10 trees are being planted by GreenDimes in her name. And yes, she'll still receive the very important catalogs from all the places she currently shops at, because she's on a completely different kind of list for them.
