Girlawhirl tries to buy organic whenever she can. She's been doing it for years. And more and more people are doing the same thing. According to the Organic Trade Association, more than 40 percent of US consumers say they use organic products regularly. So it's no wonder that “organic” labels are popping up everywhere. But not all “organic” labels are created equal. So Girlawhirl did a little research to find out exactly what she is getting…
She found out that it's important to check the labels carefully because there are four categories.

•“Organic” means the product contains at least 95 percent organic ingredients.
•“Made with organic ingredients” means that at least 70 percent of the product has to be organic.
•“Contains organic ingredients” means that less than 70 percent of the product is organic. So that could mean anything from one to 69 percent organic.
Another supermarket shopping trick Girlawhirl picked up is to read the “PLU” codes on the stickers on produce. If the code begins with a 9, it's organic. If it starts with a 4, that means it was conventionally grown.
Armed with this information, Girlawhirl is more sure than ever that she's shopping smart and healthy.
