Girlawhirl is a big fan of Earth Day, and truly believes in the motto: Make Earth Day Everyday. So she tries to incorporate a little bit of planet-saving into everyday. But since Earth Day falls in April, she definitely tries to up the ante a bit and turn it into her own personal “Earth Month” of sorts. This week that means taking some time to support the groups doing the legwork to safeguard the environment. Today she's turning her attention to the Natural Resources Defense Council and its work to protect the world around her...
Instead of just concentrating its efforts on one of the earth's resources – like the oceans, or forests, or wildlife – the Natural Resources Defense Council [NRDC] works to protect them all. Founded in 1970, the defense council's goal is to keep the planet in working order, so, in turn, all forms of life and ecological systems can thrive. Made up of a community of more than 300 lawyers, scientists and policy experts, and 1.2 million members and “e-activists”, the NRDC strives to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things by giving everyone a voice.
Currently, the NRDC says it is focusing on what it views as the most pressing issues facing the environment today, including global warming and working to lessen America's dependency on oil, as well as helping China “go green.” It is also working to remove toxic chemicals from the environment, revive the oceans, and preserve wildlife and wild places.
