Earth day shopping with Girlawhirl
Apr 20, 2007

Girlawhirl carries a cool black purse made from recycled rubber and, truth be told, she gets tons of compliments. She loves the idea that it's functional, looks great, and kept a couple of tires out of a landfill. In honor of Earth Day, Sunday the 22nd, she checked out a favorite website and found a few more recycled items that she's pretty sure will make their way into her apartment – and her life…

• Arriving at a friend's house empty handed isn't something Girlawhirl feels good about, especially if there's a party or gathering on the other side of the door. For hostesses of all kinds, flowers are always nice, but these flowers, each one a spectacular sculpture created by hand from recycled tin are even better.

• Girlawhirl isn't sure how she'd make it through a week – or a trip – without her stash of Luna® and Nectar™ bars, so she got a chuckle out of this purse constructed from Luna wrappers. It's cute and colorful, and best of all, has kept all those wrappers out of landfills. There's also a clutch and tote made from all kinds of wrappers.

• Girlawhirl remembers that when she was a kid she made a vase from a recycled wine bottle, carefully cutting it and finishing off the edge with a Bunsen burner. Wine bottle recycling has come a long way since then and these two sets of glasses are perfect examples! The blue glasses have ‘swimming' fish on them and the green ones are etched with flowers.

• These pretty frames are made from wood that's recycled from old boats in Thailand. Girlawhirl likes to group a few together or give them in gifts of two or three so the mix of colors can bounce off of each other. And who would have thought that an old bicycle chain could look new again, as a frame?
