a recycled paper fashion show is taking place in san francisco tonight
Nov 15, 2007

Girlawhirl does everything she can to reduce her paper usage. She pauses to think before she clicks print, each and every time; prefers forwarding memos via email and has gone paperless in all of her accounting (translation: pays bills online). But with magazines, presentations and packets, using paper is inevitable. So she was excited to hear about one dedicated sect of the artful fashion flock that is giving discarded paper a second life on the runway…

Some of the Bay Area's best designers are coming together tonight to showcase their most “creative unwasting of paper” in fashion and objects d'art at the AIGA San Francisco Fall Gala named The Afterlife: Paper, Purgatory and The Great Beyond.

The American Institute of Graphic Art's gala will feature a recycled paper runway fashion show – the most exciting part to Girlawhirl – and an auction to benefit AIGA SF's initiatives, which include promoting sustainable design, education, and community building. Toss in a live DJ and giveaways, and it sounds like an eco-friendly night in heaven.

Girlawhirl also digs that the gala is taking its promise to be eco-friendly very seriously, from the invitations right down to the cutlery. To give the invites a third life, the first 100 guests to show up with an artfully decorated invitation to add to a working installation will be given a free drink. Plus, instead of using plastics, all of the plates and napkins will be made of compostable materials and the knives, forks and other utensils are made from corn and paper! Now those are the kind of party planning tips Girlawhirl's looking for.
