Girlawhirl's figured out how to make the ink in her printer last a little longer Apr 9, 2009

Ecofont: this is a free font that can be downloaded into any computer. It works best when letters are kept small, so it's perfect for printing work documents. Each letter has been designed with little holes throughout, so ink isn't deposited there during printing. Savings: about 20% less ink is used. Ecofont can be downloaded here.
Evergreen font: it's a little narrower than typical types, so more words fit on the page. Not for the truly farsighted, because the letters are definitely squished together a bit, and there's less savings when font size is increased to compensate. From the same folks behind GreenPrint, it can be purchased separately or with the Print Greener download ($10-$35). Savings: about 20% but that doesn't include the pages saved when using the GreenPrint program.
A couple more ways to save: use “draft” mode when printing makes everything print in grey rather than black or bold words, then switch to “outline” mode for printing.
Naturally, when Girlawhirl's ink cartridge is empty, she makes sure it's recycled. Her new ink contains an envelope where she can mail it – free of charge – to a recycling center. And even easier, since there's one nearby her office, Staples deducts $3 off the price of a replacement when she brings in any old ink or toner cartridge to the store.
