girlawhirl's stunned by the realities of CO2 emissions
Mar 5, 2009
Girlawhirl's been fighting with her own carbon footprint for years now – and she's settled into what can best be called a truce – balancing the realities of her life with the need to reduce the CO2 emissions that are attributed to her life and lifestyle. But every time she feels as if she's in a green groove – really making headway or fully integrating tasks that help her “live smaller” – she's hit with the larger reality of the situation we're all facing. Here are some startling facts about carbon emissions. . .

• The Carbon Dioxide emissions that we're creating today will still be around in 100 years. Yes, it's true; it takes that long for CO2 to make its way out of the Earth's atmosphere.

• With Global Warming and the effects of too much CO2 already coming into play, it means that we've got to make drastic reductions – a recent report from the US Government suggested 70-90% reductions – now to stop the warming cycle.

• Since the Kyoto Protocol was signed in 1992, global CO2 emissions from the burning of fossil fuels have increased 35%. *

It's all enough to make her throw up her hands in disgust. How can her recycling, her use of public transportation and carbon credits when traveling, and her eat-local-buy-local edict make a dent? Whatever she does may feel insignificant, but it's not. When combined, the actions of individuals can add up to huge reductions in carbon emissions. For example:

Driving a hybrid car reduces CO2 emissions for that car by about 16,000 pounds a year. If half of the 62 million cars in America were hybrids, it would prevent 512,000,000,000 (that's billion!) pounds of CO2 from ever getting into the atmosphere.
