world water day is this sunday
it's celebrated on march 22 every year
Mar 19, 2009

Ever since March 22nd was deemed World Water Day by the United Nations in 1993, it's been a day that focuses on conferences, seminars and other ways to promote awareness of water conservation and the need to provide fresh clean water to people who don't have access to it…

Already a supporter of charity:water, an organization that builds wells in villages and communities where they're needed, Girlawhirl took a few minutes to find out more about the need for fresh water around the world, and as usual when she digs deeper, she's overwhelmed by the facts:

Every day 4,200 children die because of water related diseases *

Almost 900 million people worldwide don't have access to clean drinking water. *

For each dollar invested in water and sanitation projects the return ranges from $3 to $34. *

Planet Earth is 70% water, but only 2.5% of that water is freshwater, the rest is salt water.**

Every year a different aspect of the global water crisis is highlighted. Last year it was sanitation, the year before the scarcity of fresh water. For 2009, the UN is focusing on shared water, or waterways that cross boundaries between countries and how managing them can be an opportunity for not just peace but sustainability as well.

Water truly is one of the most precious resources on Earth, and Girlawhirl and her Super Pals will do what then can – not just today or next week – this has also been designated World Water Week – but every day, to conserve it.
