Girlawhirl, like most of the women she knows, tries to drink six to eight glasses of water a day. Some days she makes it, but truth be told, most days she doesn't make it to her goal. But on a day like today, which has been designated World Water Day by The United Nations, the whole idea of six to eight glasses a day makes Girlawhirl feel like a bit of a glutton…

This year World Water Day focuses on the subject of water scarcity. And, honestly, that isn't something Girlawhirl – who sees big bottles lined up for the water cooler in her office, almost a full aisle dedicated to all kinds of water in her grocery store, and practically everyone she knows carrying their own personal water supply around town – thinks about all that often.

Sure she turns off the tap when she's brushing her teeth and keeps her showers short, but the closest she's ever come to a water shortage is when she's on a long haul flight – in coach – and she finishes the bottle of water she carried on and realizes that the water the flight attendants are serving comes from the airplane's cooling system.

But by the year 2025, almost two billion people will be living in areas where there's not enough water to meet the demands of industry, agriculture and themselves. And even today, in some of the poorest places in the world, where running water and sanitation are practically non-existent, people pay up to ten times as much for water in containers than those who live in areas where tap water is available.

So today, Girlawhirl has decided that she's cutting back. Sure she'll still strive to drink six to eight glasses of water a day, but she's no longer buying small bottles. In her city the tap water tastes great, and when she's in the office there's a water cooler not too far from her office door. She's got a great refillable jug for the gym and an even cooler looking one for traveling.
She's already been recycling batteries, but now she'll put a jar in the office to collect everyone else's so that much less mercury will find its way into the ground water.

And with that money she's saving on bottled water, she's supporting a few organizations that work to protect and conserve water sources and provide water to those who desperately need it.
