Girlawhirl uses the FDA's Fish Mercury chart to make smart fish choices
Jul 18, 2006

Girlawhirl sees the headlines and reads the news: she should be eating more fish. With its high level of omega 3 fatty acids and low caloric density, news reports seem to be promising her a longer life, a more nimble brain, and a slimmer waistline, if she consumes more fish…

But there are a few downsides. While Girlawhirl doesn't minimize the perils of over-fishing and she's sure to always purchase dolphin-friendly tuna, she's also concerned about the mercury issue.

And while there is a lot of confusing information out there, the FDA guidelines, which the American Medical Association also recommends following, suggest that women of childbearing age eat no more than 12 ounces of low mercury fish a week. That goes for kids too.

Now that she knows how much fish she can eat, Girlawhirl's found a chart, published by the FDA that lists mercury levels found in different kinds of fish. It helps her choose cod over swordfish and salmon over sea bass.

Girlawhirl found the chart, published by the FDA online.
