the flow system provides sitting-exercises for a sit-down society

Girlawhirl's trainer, Tiffany Davidson is constantly telling her to get up and move throughout the day. Delivering a message to her boss on the floor above earns her points not just for keeping everyone in the loop but also as a quick shot of exercise - especially if she takes the stairs as quickly as she can...

As it turns out, most of us live in a "sit-down" society. Unfortunately, sitting for long periods of time wreaks havoc on hip flexors and a variety of other muscles, reduces blood circulation, and contributes to poor posture and weight gain

 

Imagine sitting at a desk all day except for the occasional visit to the ladies' room and a trip to the deli at noon. That's at least eight hours of "sit time" not to mention the time you may spend sitting commuting. After work there's usually a sit down dinner - table or couch both count here - and then it's a quick vertical transition to TV watching and to bed and soon enough, it starts all over again.

 

Tiffany's suggestion when sitting is unavoidable: FLOW. FLOW is a software program Girlawhirl can install on her computer. It's full of sitting exercises to do when she might otherwise just be sitting. In addition, there's a virtual trainer, nutritional information and inspirational messages.

 

Included are seven 5-minute segments covering stretching, biceps and triceps, abdominals, chest, shoulders, back and legs. It's programmable so workouts can pop up on the computer screen throughout the day at pre-set intervals, or Girlawhirl can click right over for a mini-workout whenever she wants to. There are options that allow her to mute or listen to music, instruction and/or inspirational messages while she's "sit-exercising". The Nutrition Center is full of information on subjects ranging from the Food Pyramid Guide to Why Diets Don't Work to Vitamins, and the inspirational messages keep her in a positive frame of mind.

 

Girlawhirl loved the fact that FLOW reminded her to take small exercise breaks throughout the day. Not only did she feel better physically, but her output was more efficient!
