Girlawhirl is always conscious of - some might even go so far as to say she's obsessed with - the state of her skin. Not just the current state of her pores, or those little rough spots on her heels and elbows, but also how healthy it is. She is very vigilant about spots and moles and always uses some sort of SPF -even during the winter. With the summer approaching she's stocking up on her favorite sunscreens, SPF lippy, and the like. And today, in honor of Melanoma Monday, she's making a point to get her free melanoma screening…

Girlawhirl tries to take advantage of the free skin cancer screening offered on Melanoma Monday -the first Monday of May - every year. Sponsored by the American Academy of Dermatology, it's a day dedicated to helping everyone spot potentially hazardous moles (etc.) from evolving into something far more dangerous: melanoma, the most lethal form of skin cancer. That's important because Melanoma is being diagnosed more and more in the US. In fact, it's considered the fastest growing cancer in terms of diagnosis in the country and it's the most common cancer in both men and women between the age of 20 and 29.

Even if Girlawhirl can't make it to a free screening in her area (according to the National Safety Council, more than 2,000 volunteers will give free melanoma screenings today and throughout the year), she's happy to use Melanoma Monday as a reminder to make an appointment with her dermatologist for her annual screening.

But there are a few things she can look for herself to make sure she stays melanoma free all year long using the “ABCs of Melanoma.” According to dermatologists, Girlawhirl should consider the Asymmetry, Border, Color and Diameter of a questionable mole. Girlawhirl should also be aware of the recently added E and F” too: Elevation of a possible problematic growth, and whether or not it's become Funny-looking.

With those easy to remember guidelines Girlawhirl's sure to easily spot any suspicious skin problems. And with Melanoma Monday happening every May, she's equally certain not to miss her annual skin screening.
